Cérémonie à la mémoire de Jeannette - 20 ans
Cérémonie à la mémoire de Jeannette Fournier et inauguration d'une stèle commémorative sur le lieu de l'accident, en présence du chef de délégation Jean-Nicolas Marti, de la communauté et de ses représentants, ainsi que de Maxym Gutov et Aliou Djiba, qui se trouvaient à bord du véhicule ayant sauté sur une mine. La pose de la première pierre de la stèle a eu lieu en présence du vice-président Juerg Lauber, deux semaines auparavant.

Commemorating the Legacy of Frédéric Maurice
As in previous years, the Red Cross of Sarajevo Canton marked May 18 with dignity and respect, honoring the memory of Frédéric Maurice, an ICRC delegate who tragically lost his life while accompanying an aid convoy for the residents of Sarajevo at the onset of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.


​​This year marks 34 years since his passing, yet the Red Cross continues to uphold his memory. Following the war, they established a memorial in his honor, and every May 18, representatives from the Red Cross, the ICRC, local authorities, and the media gather to pay tribute. Together, they lay flowers and remember not only Frédéric Maurice but also other fallen workers and volunteers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the conflict.

The commemoration stands as a solemn reminder of the courage and dedication of humanitarian workers and the enduring gratitude of the community they served.​​

Our Day of Remembrance 2026
Dear colleagues and friends, Dear members of National Societies, Dear families, On 23 April, we observed our Day of Remembrance, a solemn and essential moment in the life of the ICRC to honour the memory of colleagues and members of our Movement who are no longer with us.

Throughout the ceremony, a common message resonated: remembrance is not only a time to mourn, but also a time to honour, to stand in solidarity with one another, and to carry forward the values embodied by those we have lost.

Our Day of Remembrance remains, above all, a moment to pause. A moment to reflect. A moment to remember.

Day of Remembrance 2025
On 25 March, we marked our Day of Remembrance, an important moment in the life of the ICRC when we honour the memory of those we have lost. After a particularly challenging year for humanitarian workers responding to rising violence and conflict around the world, it was an opportunity to remember the dedication of our colleagues and celebrate their lives and work.

Speaking in the Jardin du Souvenir at our Geneva headquarters, our Vice President, Gilles Carbonnier, paid tribute to our colleagues who have been killed or injured in security incidents over the past year.

Along with some of the families who lost loved ones, former colleagues and HQ staff, the Vice President was joined by our Director General, Pierre Krähenbühl, and our Director of Operations, Yasmine Praz Dessimoz. We were joined by Christopher Rassi, the IFRC's Chief of Staff and Under Secretary General.

Gilles Carbonnier said: "This day is a time to mourn, but also to honour and celebrate the lives of our colleagues who dedicated themselves to the ICRC's humanitarian mission. Their commitment will never be forgotten.

Day of Remembrance 2024
Speaking at the ceremony in the ‘Jardin du Souvenir’ at our HQ in Geneva, our Director General Robert Mardini saluted the strength and dedication to principled humanitarian action of those who have died, saying: “Every life protected, every person-in-need assisted, is a tribute to the colleagues we honour today.”

Our Vice President, Gilles Carbonnier, spoke of this being a moment in which we can share our feelings and pain, not least following the difficulties for the organization last year. Before looking at some of the key events that marked last year, Gilles said: “I wish to pay tribute to those of you who have suffered physically and mentally in the course of your humanitarian work, and in particular to our beloved colleagues whom we have lost over the past 12 months.”

Looking to the longer-term nature of remembrance, Robert noted that this year marks the tenth anniversary of security incidents in which we lost Siradjou Mamadou in the Central African Republic, Michael Greub in Libya and Laurent Du Pasquier in Ukraine.

This ongoing act of remembrance is supported by the Memorial Project, began in 2019, to create both a new physical space at our Geneva HQ, and an online resource at which to read more about and share memories of colleagues.

Day of Remembrance 2023
On 21 March we came together as an organization to honour the memory of all our colleagues who have died in the course of their work. We marked the occasion at headquarters with a musical event in the Garden of Remembrance. A global event was broadcasted live to all staff worldwide. A focus was made on commemorating colleagues killed in Afghanistan and Iraq in 2003.
